Aylott & Van Tromp has some knowledge when it comes to high-end design. The UK-based interior design and branding agency's clients range from Hilton, for whom the firm "redesigned breakfast" (bright whites can be jarring in the morning, so there are more warm tones), to a luxurious Jiu Jitsu gym (dark wood, lighting, this is serious stuff). Regardless of what is built, from the brand to the materials, the atmosphere is luxurious, the look a little Scandinavian.
The same goes for the latest, a new prefabricated cabin that the company developed from scratch to sell to hoteliers interested in small additions to their properties, or in creating entire resorts anew. Like Aylott & Van Tromp's previous prefab effort, another cabin designed for resorts in collaboration with British firm Koto, the Nokken cabin can be customized right down to the finishes and fittings.
“We sculpted the ca Special Data bins with ideals of individuality, adaptability and efficiency in mind,” says James Van Tromp, founder and director of the firm with his partner, Nathan Aylott.
The duo is betting on post-pandemic travel, specifically looking to capture a growing interest in "scenery hotels," luxury accommodations somewhere serene and probably with a great view. Anyone can buy a single cabin, but Aylott & Van Tromp envisions clusters of them located in remote locations to combine the camping experience with the amenities found in a luxury hotel.
Like glamping, a stay in one would provide the tranquility of connecting with nature, but without going through it. Trade the tent for a cabin, add the perks of a resort (a lake, pool or tennis courts, for example) and the experience is much more elegant.
Aylott and Van Tromp designed the Nokken to be flexible – “It can be used as travel accommodation, work space, commercial element, spa, restaurant or simply as a beautiful home ,” says Aylott – but the first built example functions as a hotel suite. Wrapped in perforated metal and dark brown-stained European larch, the rectangular prefab includes an open kitchen and living room, a bedroom, a bathroom, and wall-height windows for a view.
The modular cabin as resort accommodation is not a new concept. Moliving builds small prefabricated cabins on wheels that can be similarly arranged to create full resorts. But Aylott & Van Tromp, a firm known for its services, plans to sell more than just the cabin. “We offer full-service integration,” Aylott says. "So if a buyer needs assistance with their business, whether it's marketing, branding, management, or even recreational advice, we're there."
As Nokken catches up with hoteliers creating new resorts or adding existing ones to the destination setup, you can be too.
